IT’S THE GREAT FLORIDA BACKYARD BIOBLITZ!

An at-home adventure awaits! The beauty and benefits of nature are all around us. What will you discover in your own backyard or neighborhood? Be part of the Great Florida Backyard Bioblitz by observing and documenting the life around your home and community during the months of April & May!

WHY?

We know that being OUTSIDE and enjoying nature is important right now. We are doing our part to flatten that curve by staying at home as much as possible. We know it’s the right thing to do, but we’re dreaming of being outside, enjoying the fresh air, springtime colors, lush forests, glimmering water, and wide-open spaces. Ahhh, WE LOVE YOU, FLORIDA!

Instead of visiting our favorite outdoor destinations, we’re hoping you’ll join us for a dose of #WildFloridaRx by exploring your own backyards and neighborhoods and participating in the #GreatFloridaBioblitz!

WHAT'S A BIOBLITZ?

Participants come together to find, count, and identify as many species of plants, animals, microbes, fungi, and other organisms as they can spot!

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Everyone! A bioblitz is designed to be fun and informative for families and people of all ages and abilities. A smartphone is required to participate in the species cataloging activities but not needed to enjoy learning about and experiencing natural Florida.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE?

You may encounter a variety of wildlife, including: snakes, mosquitoes, ticks, spiders, tortoises, birds, and butterflies—in your own backyard or community! It’s crazy what you’ll see when you look. You should wear comfortable walking shoes, consider wearing sunscreen, bug spray, and protective clothing.

HOW DO I RECORD WHAT I SEE?

If you haven't already done so, please download the iNaturalist app to your smartphone. This app allows you to record your observations directly to Conservation Florida's bioblitz project. Please visit the iNaturalist tutorials for more information and join our iNaturalist project here. Record your findings! You can also share your experience on social media using #GreatFloridaBioblitz
